Chow chow is often referred to as 'Bengaluru Katharikai' in some parts of Tamil Nadu. This is called as Chayote in English. Its from south America originally. let see how to make dal kootu out of it

INGREDIENTS:
- Chopped Chow chow - 250 grams
- Moong dhal (green gram) - 150 grams
- Finely chopped) Onions - 2
- Slit Green chilies - 3
- Cumin powder- 2 teaspoon (tsp.)
- Mustard seeds - 2 teaspoon (tsp.)
- Spilt black gram - 2 teaspoon (tsp.)
- Grated coconut - 3 tablespoon (tbsp.)
- Coriander leaves - for garnishing.
- Asafoetida powder - a pinch
- Oil - 1 tablespoon
- Salt - to taste
PREPARATION:
- Bring half a liter of water to boil and add moong dhal to it. and when cooked /4th add chow chow, onions and green chilies and required amount of salt and let it cook till the vegetable and dhal is cooked.
- Now add cumin powder and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes and remove from stove (heat)
- Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds once they start splattering add split black gram, asafoetida powder. Add this to Kootu
- Garnish the kootu with grated coconut, coriander leaves and serve.
NOTES:
- Alternatively, you can grind coconut, cumin seeds and add to the Chow Chow when it cooked. If you like it more spicy, grind green chilies along with coconut.
