Tomato (thakkali) thokku recipe

INGREDIENTS:

  1. Chopped onion - 1
  2. Chopped Tomato - 3
  3. Slit Green chili - 3
  4. Curry leaf - little
  5. Coriander leaf - little
  6. -- Powders to add --
    1. Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon (tsp.)
    2. Chili powder - 1 teaspoon (tsp.)
    3. Salt - as needed
  7. -- For Tempering --
    1. Mustard seed - 1/4 teaspoon (tsp.)
    2. Fenugreek seed - 4 or 5 count
    3. Split black gram - 1/2 teaspoon (tsp.)
    4. Oil - tablespoon (tbsp.)

PREPARATION:

  1. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, split black gram. Once the mustard seeds stop splattering add onion and sauté.
  2. Once the onion is little sautéed. add tomato, green chili and sauté for 1 to 2 minutes.
  3. Now add all the ingredients under the section "-- Powders to add --"
  4. Now stir and cook until tomato is cooked and mashed well.
  5. Now add 1 cup of water and cook for 3 to 4 minutes. Before you remove from heat add curry leaves, coriander leaves.
  6. Tomato thokku is ready to be served.

NOTES:

  1. Goes well with idli, dosai, chapati.
  2. Add water only after you add the powders.
  3. Cooking time: 15 minutes
