INGREDIENTS:

  1. Split Mung Dal - 1 cup
  2. Shallots - 5
  3. Tomatoes - 1
  4. Hot Green Chili - 2
  5. Curry leaves (optional) - 5
  6. Garlic - 5 pieces
  7. Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon (tsp)
  8. Black Pepper - 1/2 teaspoon (tsp)
  9. Oil - as needed
  10. Salt - to taste
  11. Turmeric Powder - 1/4 teaspoon (tsp)
  12. Asafoetida - 1/4 teaspoon (tsp)

PREPARATION:

  1. Cut the tomatoes, shallots, hot green chilies into small pieces. 
  2. Crush the garlic, cumin seeds and black pepper in a pestle. 
  3. Add water and cook the mung dal soft with turmeric powder and cut tomatoes.
  4. Heat oil in a pan add cut shallot, hot green chili, crushed (garlic, cumin seeds and black pepper) ingredients and curry leaves until the shallots turn golden brown.
  5. Now add the cooked Mung Dal, Asafoetida and salt and cook for 3-5 min.

NOTES:

  1. Now a good sambar is ready for Dosai (dosa).
