INGREDIENTS:

  1. Shallots or small onion - 10
  2. Tomato - 4
  3. Split black gram - 1 teaspoon (tsp)
  4. Split Bengal gram - 1 teaspoon (tsp)
  5. Hot dry chili - 7
  6. Tamarind - 1 Gooseberry size
  7. Coriander leaves - 1/2 cup
  8. Shredded coconut - 1/4 cup
  9. Garlic - 5 cloves
  10. Salt - to taste
  11. Sesame Oil or Nalla Ennai - as required

PREPARATION:

  1. Soak tamarind in little water. Heat 4 table spoon of oil.
  2. Add Split black gram, Split Bengal gram, hot dry chili and fry until they dal's turn golden brown. Remove from heat. Separate the ingredients from the oil.
  3. Heat the same pan (oil left from fry) add onion, garlic, tomato and cook until it becomes a mash.
  4. Grind the paste along with coconut, coriander leaves, salt, soaked tamarind.
  5. Chutney is ready to be served.
