Spicy javvarisi appam recipe

INGREDIENTS:

  1. Idli batter (fresh not too fermented) - 2 cup
  2. Javvarisi (Tapioca Sago) - 1/4 cup
  3. Cumin seed - 1 teaspoon (tsp.)
  4. Finely chopped Onion - 1
  5. Finely chopped Green chili - 3
  6. Finely chopped Ginger - 1/2 inch
  7. Chopped Curry leaf - 6
  8. Mustard seed - 1 teaspoon (tsp.)
  9. Split black gram - 1/2 tablespoon (tbsp.)
  10. Sesame oil - as needed
  11. Salt - 3/4 teaspoon (tsp.)

PREPARATION:

  1. Add javvarisi, salt as needed to the idli batter and keep it aside for 5 to 6 hours.
  2. After soaking,  add onion, green chili, ginger, curry leaves and beat the batter well.
  3. In a pan heat 1 tablespoon (tbsp.) of oil. Add mustard seeds, split black gram, cumin seeds. Once the mustard seeds stop splattering add this this to the batter and mix well.
  4. -- Making the appam --
    1. Heat a tablespoon (tbsp.) of oil in a flat skillet.
    2. Now pour a ladle of batter and spread to thick round sheet.
    3. Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon (tsp.) of oil. Place a lid and cook this for 2 minutes. i.e. golden brown on the side down.
  5. Make more appam with the rest of the batter and serve.

NOTES:

  1. Eat this with chutney.
