Shrimp thokku recipe

INGREDIENTS:

  1. Shrimp - 1/2 kilogram
  2. Tomato - 2
  3. Chopped Shallot (sambar onion) - 100 grams
  4. Chopped Garlic - 10 cloves
  5. Curry leaf - 8
  6. Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon (tsp.)
  7. Fennel seeds - 1/2 tablespoon (tbsp.)
  8. Split black gram - 1/2 teaspoon (tsp.)
  9. Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon (tsp.)
  10. Cumin seed powder - 1/2 teaspoon (tsp.)
  11. Chili powder - 1 tablespoon (tbsp.) + 1/2 teaspoon (tsp.)
  12. Salt - as needed

PREPARATION:

  1. Grind tomato, fennel seeds, 2 tablespoon (tbsp.) of water and grind to a thick fine paste.
  2. In pan heat oil. Now add the black gram and sauté until grams turn brown.
  3. Now add garlic and sauté for 30 seconds.
  4. Now add curry leaves, shallot (sambar onion) and sauté until the shallot turns translucent (golden brown).
  5. Now add the shrimp (make sure all the liquid is drained from the shrimp) and sauté  for 2 minutes.
  6. Now add the turmeric powder, chili powder, black pepper, cumin powder and sauté for a minute.
  7. Now add the tomato puree and bring to boil. 
  8. Now add 2 cups of water bring to boil and cook for 5 more minutes or to the right thickness of your choice and serve.

NOTES:

  1. Cooking until the oil start separate will give good result.
  2. In step 8, instead of 2 cup of water you can add 1 cup of water and 1 cup of coconut milk for better taste.
